ELMER W. GREWELL1925-2010Elmer Willard Grewell, 85, West Lafayette, passed away early Friday evening, Dec. 17, 2010, at the Grant Medical Center, Columbus, following a brief illness.Elmer was born in Tuscarawas County on March 6, 1925, a son of the late Elmer D. Grewell, who died in 1973, and the late Margaret Anna Myers Grewell, who died in 1996. He was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, Class of 1943. He then served a tour of duty with the Army. He was a member of the 774th Field Artillery Battalion which served in the European theater during World War II and with the Army Occupation of Germany forces after the war. Following his tour of duty with the Army, Elmer and his new bride returned to Ohio. He was employed as a file cutter at the former Heller Brothers Tool Company, Newcomerstown, for over 37 years before his retirement in 1987. He also was employed in the concession stand of the former StarLite Drive-In Theater, West Lafayette, and also owned and operated a television repair shop in Port Washington. Elmer was a member of the Thomas Montgomery Post 431, Newcomerstown American Legion and the Darrell Beiter Post 3303, Newcomerstown VFW. He enjoyed collecting coins, fishing, writing poetry and music, and gardening. He also served as a judge for a few years at the Marietta College State Science Fair. Elmer was always there to help lend a hand to his family and his many friends and was a giving and selfless friend to many people for all his adult life. He also spent many years as a caregiver to his wife.In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Georgette E. Noel Grewell, West Lafayette, who died May 8, 1994, and whom he married in Belgium at the conclusion of World War II on May 28, 1946. Also deceased are two brothers, A. Wayne Grewell and Edward B. Grewell, both of Newcomerstown; and a sister, Edith Cornell of Newcomerstown.Elmer is survived by two sons and a daughter, Dan W. (Sue) Grewell and Melody S. (David D.) Hostutler, all of Coshocton, and Dr. David A. (Christine) Grewell of Ames, Iowa; five grandchildren, Michelle (Brian) Grubbs of Athens, Christie (Pat) Gryszka of Albany, Sabrina Hebron of Coshocton, Jeremy Hebron of Conesville, and Emily Sharrock of Coshocton; a step grandson, Heath Thomason of Connecticut; a step-granddaughter, Gianna Strohm of Wisconsin; two great-grandchildren, Madison Hebron of Clark and Marilyn Holmes; three sisters, Anna B. Edmondson of West Lafayette, Violet Myers and her companion, Phillip Wagner of Coshocton, and Mary H. (Aaron) Swank of Newcomerstown; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia "Kaye" Grewell and Mary Jane Grewell, both of Newcomerstown; and several nieces and nephews.Funeral services to celebrate Elmer's life were Dec. 22, 2010, at the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. Burial followed in the Coshocton County Memory Gardens, where the Coshocton County Veterans Council performed military graveside services.
