Howard Isaac "Ike" Meek, 79, of Newcomerstown, passed away Wednesday morning, April 13, 2011, in his Newcomerstown residence following a short struggle with pancreatic cancer.

Howard was born in Newcomerstown June 30, 1931, a son of the late Howard and Cora Mitchell Meek.

He was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, Class of 1949. Howard then served in the Army in Korea during the Korean War. Following this tour of duty, he went on and served two terms of enlistment with the Ohio National Guard. In civilian life, Ike was a welder and boilermaker with Local 744, Cleveland, where he was employed for over 23 years until his retirement in 1993. Prior to this employment, he was an employee and foreman with the former Alsco Company, Gnadenhutten, for 14 years.

Ike was a member of the former Full Gospel Temple, Oxford Township. He also attended the Wesley Community Chapel, Washington Township. Ike was a member of the Darrell Beiter Post 3303, Newcomerstown VFW. He also belonged to the Chosin Few Fraternity of Honor, Waynesville, N.C. The members of the Chosin Few served in Korea in the Chosin Reservoir Campaign in November and December 1950. Ike was also a member of the Tuscarawas County Baseball Hall of Fame. He enjoyed reading, playing baseball until he was in his 40s, watching golf on television, and playing the guitar with a group of friends who played at several of the area's nursing homes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond Meek of Newcomerstown, who died while serving in the Korean War, Harry Meek of Columbus, and Roy "Dutch" Meek of Newcomerstown; and his special Miniature Pincher, "Sky."

Ike is survived by his wife of 52 years, Donna L. Loader Meek of Newcomerstown, whom he married July 5, 1958. Also surviving are two daughters and a son, Sue Ann (Tom) Charlton of Newcomerstown, Darla K. Meek of Coshocton and Robert H. "Bob" (Angela) Meek of Gnadenhutten; five grandchildren, Andy Wright, Courtney McCune, and Nicholas "Nick" Bucher, all of Newcomerstown, and Taylor and Kevin Meek, both of Gnadenhutten; a great-grandson, Trenton Wright of Newcomerstown; brother, Chester R. "Chet" (Marsha) Meek of Port Washington; sister, Dora A. Quillin of Newcomerstown; sister-in-law, Edna Meek of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Raymond Meek.

To honor Ike's requests, there will be no public visiting hours. Private graveside services and burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown, at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Roger Bourne will officiate and the Newcomerstown Veterans' Honor Guard will perform military graveside services.
