Emmett Richard Sloan, 74, Washington Township, Port Washington, formerly of Portage County, passed away at his Port Washington residence on Monday, Sept. 5, 2011, following a lengthy illness.

Emmett was born in Roane County, W.Va., on Feb. 23, 1937, and was preceded in death by his parents, John W. Sloan and Flora E. Nida Sloan.

He was employed as a diesel mechanic with International Harvester for over 21 years prior to his disability retirement in 1987. Prior to that, he was employed in the construction industry in West Virginia. Emmett enjoyed hunting, fishing, and landscaping as his favorite outdoor activities. He also enjoyed archery.

In addition to his parents, Emmett was preceded in death by eight brothers and a sister.

He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Jett Sloan, Port Washington, whom he married Dec. 8, 1958. Also surviving are his son, Richard Dale Sloan of Port Washington; daughter, Rose Ellen (David Dave) Lloyd of Mantua; a grandson, Wilder Alan Sloan of Port Washington; a granddaughter, Amy Conner of Hiram; a brother, James L. (Betty J.) Sloan, of Clendenin, W.Va.; a sister, Edith M. Ferrabee of Clay County, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

To honor Emmetts requests, his remains are to be cremated. No visiting hours will be observed. Graveside services and burial will follow at a later date in West Virginia.

The Ourant Funeral Home in Newcomerstown assisted the family with all the arrangements.
