James Eugene Jim Hunt, 77, of West Lafayette, formerly of Newcomerstown, passed away early Friday afternoon, Nov. 11, 2011, at his West Lafayette residence following a brief illness.
Jim was born on June 21, 1934, in Lock Seventeen, Clay Township, and was preceded in death by his parents, Russell H. Hunt, who died in 1956, and Mary Burdette Hunt, who died in 1987.
Jim learned at an early age the value of hard work. Due to his fathers disability, Jim and his brother Richard worked to maintain the family home and support their parents and family.
He was a graduate of Gnadenhutten High School, class of 1952.
Jim was also an Army veteran, serving in active duty from 1956 until 1958 as a traffic manager with the USA Ordinance Depot, Ft. Lee, Va. Upon his return to civilian life, Jim was employed in the maintenance department of General Tire & Rubber, Newcomerstown, for 30 years before his retirement in 1996. Prior to that, he worked for the Alsco Company, Gnadenhutten, Kurz-Kasch, Newcomerstown, Ross Clay, Gnadenhutten, and RCA in Cambridge.
Jim was a Protestant by faith and was a life member of the Newcomerstown Elks Lodge 1555, Newcomerstown. He was a former member of the LOOM Moose Lodge 1337, Newcomerstown, where he served as governor.
One of Jims favorite activities was organic gardening, which he accomplished without the use of pesticides. He never hesitated to give advice on controlling those pesky garden bugs.
He willingly shared his gardening expertise with many of his family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his grandchildren, reading the morning newspaper, and spending time with his dog, Babe.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a son, Glenn R. Hunt, Newcomerstown, who died in 1993. Also deceased are a brother, Richard Hunt of Newcomerstown; two infant brothers, Raymond Hunt and Donald Hunt, both of Lock Seventeen; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Hunt of Newcomerstown.
Jim is survived by his wife, Mary T. Cutshall Hunt, West Lafayette, whom he married June 10, 1956.
Also surviving are a daughter and her husband, Kathy Shryock-Anderson and Rocky Anderson, Newcomerstown; two sons, Steve (Kim) Hunt of New Philadelphia and Kelly E. Hunt of Newcomerstown; six grandchildren, Fletcher J. Shryock, Hunter W. Shryock, and Chandler Glenn Shryock, all of Newcomerstown, Tadd S. Hunt of Dover, Brandi S. Hunt-Khan and husband Sajid Khan of New Philadelphia, and Tory W. Hunt of New Philadelphia; three step-grandchildren, Rachel (Neil) Supinski, Chase Anderson, and Dylan Anderson; two sisters, Barbara Peg Eickelberry of Uhrichsville and Beverly Snooks (Bob) Milligan of Tuscarawas; several nieces and nephews in the Hunt, Cutshall, and McCormick families; and his faithful yellow Labrador, Babe.
Funeral services to celebrate Jims life were Nov. 17, 2011, at the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. Pastor James E. Reed of the Church of Christ in Christian Union, Newcomerstown, conducted the services.
Elks Lodge services took place Nov. 16 at the funeral home.
Private burial will follow at a later date in the West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown, where the Newcomerstown Veterans Honor Guard will perform military graveside services.
The family is requesting that memorials be made in Jims name to Health Services of Coshocton County (Hospice of Coshocton County), P.O. Box 1284, Coshocton, OH 43812.
