Bessie Ellen Hensley, 77, of Newcomerstown, went home to be with her Lord Sunday night, March 4, 2012, at the Riverside Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Newcomerstown.

Bessie was born in West Dunbar, Kanawha County, W.Va., on Dec. 24, 1934, a daughter of the late Ernest O. and Bettie E. Harvey Guthrie.

Bessie was a homemaker during her entire adult life. She and her family moved to Newcomerstown from West Virginia in 1963 and she became a nurse's aide at the former McCormick Hilltop Nursing Home, Newcomerstown. She was also employed as a custodian at the Huntington National Bank, Newcomerstown, the Ourant Funeral Home, and the Newcomerstown Public Library before her retirement. Bessie was a member of the Church of Christ in Christian Union, where she also worked as a custodian. She also belonged to the church's hospitality committee, which provided bereavement luncheons for the church members. Bessie enjoyed singing, especially religious music. She also enjoyed collecting dolls and attending yard sales and auctions.

Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. Hensley Sr., Newcomerstown, who died in 1989. Also deceased is a son, Howard L. Hensley Jr. of Forest Park, Ga., who died in 2008. Bessie was also the last member of her generation of the Guthrie family, as she was preceded in death by 11 sisters and five brothers.

Bessie is survived by her son, Paul E. Hensley Sr. of Newcomerstown; her daughter-in-law, Donna L. Brown Hensley of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Kristina (Tyler) Boggs of Valdosta, Ga., Elizabeth L. (Gregory) Terrell of Atlanta, and Paul E. Hensley Jr. "PJ"of Fresno; three great-grandchildren, Emily Boggs and Jake Boggs, both of Valdosta, Ga., and William Howard Terrell of Atlanta; and a sister-in-law, Carola (Cecil) Tyree of Nitro, W.Va. There are also several nieces and nephews living in West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, and Georgia. Bessie was a very special caring person who was always there to help others in their time of need. She developed a long list of friends throughout her life, including two special friends, Ruth and husband John Kistler of Newcomerstown.

Funeral services to celebrate Bessie's life were March 9, 2012, in the Church of Christ in Christian Union, 560 West State St., Newcomerstown. Pastor Jim E. Reed conducted the services. Burial was in the West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown.

The family is requesting that memorials be made in Bessie's name to the Church of Christ in Christian Union, 560 W. State St., Newcomerstown, OH 43832.

The Ourant Funeral Home in Newcomerstown is assisting the family with all the arrangements.
