NANCY L. McVEY 1943-2013

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Nancy L. McVey, 69, a longtime resident of Newcomerstown, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home Saturday night, Jan. 26, 2013, in Pensacola, Fla., following a short battle with cancer.

Nancy was born in Newcomerstown, Ohio, on Aug. 18, 1943, a daughter to the late James Howard and Mildred Irene Shaffer. Nancy spent her childhood in Newcomerstown and was a member of the Newcomerstown High School, Class of 1961.

Following high school, Nancy married Samuel K. McVey on June 10, 1961, who was enlisted in the Navy at the time. Nancy spent the next 26 years as a proud and strong Navy wife, especially during the long separations from Sam due to five deployments during the Vietnam War. All the while, raising her daughter and two sons and managing to try enjoying gardening, baking, numerous types of arts and crafts and traveling with Sam and the children wherever the Navy transferred them when possible.

After their Naval career, Nancy and Sam lived in Sumter, S.C.; Orlando, Fla.; Pensacola, Fla.; West Lafayette, Guernsey, and Newcomerstown, Ohio, where Nancy was a homemaker, nursing home employee, housekeeping employee for various hotel chains, and self-employed house keeper. She was also a proud member of the Port Washington Order of the Eastern Star. Nancy moved to Pensacola, Fla., living with her son, Kevin and his family, following the death of her husband after 48 years of marriage. Nancy enjoyed the sunny summers and warm winters of Pensacola, working in her flower gardens and walking the family dog while visiting and chatting with the neighbors, staying in touch with her daughter, Debbie, and sister, Shirley, on the phone and spending time playing cards with her granddaughter Hannah, grandson Justin, and daughter-in-law Lisa.

In addition to Sam and her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother, James Shaffer.

Nancy is survived by her two sons, Kevin K. (Lisa Norman) McVey and Shawn P. McVey; one daughter, Debra L. (Luke) Gaumer; three brothers, Glenn (Margret Ellen) Shaffer; Ronald (Phyliss) Shaffer and Charles (Vera) Shaffer; a very special sister, Shirley (Ernie) Landis; four grandchildren, Logan Gaumer, Justin McVey, Cole McVey, and Hannah McVey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nancy will sadly be missed by relatives and friends who knew her.

To honor Nancy's wishes and requests, her remains are to be cremated.

Trahan Family Funeral Home, Pensacola, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
