Sylvester Young, 73, of Newcomerstown, formerly of Massillon, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013, in the Select Specialty Hospital, Akron, following a short illness.

Sylvester was born in Inverness, Miss., Sunflower County, on Jan. 29, 1940, and was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester Young Sr. and Geneva Hollins Young. He was a graduate of McNier High School, Belzoni, Miss., Humphreys County, class of 1958. He was employed as a truck driver with Tastee Apple, Newcomerstown, for many years. Prior to that he was a driver for Yellow Bus Sales, Coshocton County, and D J M Trucking, Cleveland. For a few years, he was an assembler with 31 Inc., Newcomerstown, and was also employed in the gas well inspection business with Stocker & Sitler, Gnadenhutten. Sylvester enjoyed fishing, cooking, working on cars, and collecting fishing poles. He was a member of the former St. Paul's A. M. E. Church, Newcomerstown.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Precious Lane of Indianola, Miss., and Margaret Simpson of Detroit; two brothers, Alonzo Young of Detroit, and Richard Spells of Massillon; and his mother-in-law, Willie Belle Harris of Newcomerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Harris Young of Newcomerstown, whom he married May 4, 1970. Sylvester also leaves three sons and two daughters, Albert (Violet) Harris of Dover, Steve (Mellissa) Harris of Dennison, Sylvester (Daylene) Young Jr. of New Philadelphia, Dimittra Harris of Newcomerstown, and Geneva Harris of Newcomerstown. There are also 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Sylvester is also survived by several brothers and sisters, Johnnie Mack and wife Ruth Robinson of Indianola, Miss., Reaver Young of Detroit, Willie Lee and wife Ladonne Young of Detroit, Arthur Lee Young of Brandon, Miss., Jimmy Byars of Belzoni, Miss., Roosevelt and wife Laura Spells of Canton, Albert and wife Rozella Spells of Canton, George Spells of Canton, Inez Young Williams of Belzoni, Miss., Ollie Jolly of Gulfport, Miss., Ethel Copeland of Massillon, and Shellarella Nealy of Albany, Ga. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Zester Young of Detroit; an aunt, Savannah Young of Clarksdale, Miss.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services to celebrate Sylvester's life were Friday, March 8, 2013, in the Ourant Funeral Home. Newcomerstown. The Rev. Robert Sherrell conducted the services. Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown, at a later date.
