Robert Ambrose "Bob" Bender, 92, of Dover, formerly of West Lafayette and Port Washington, passed away late Tuesday night, March 18, 2014, in the Oak Pointe Nursing Home, Baltic.
Robert was born in Keene Township, Coshocton County, on Dec. 4, 1921, a son of the late Ezra C. Bender, who died in 1975, and the late Viola C. Salrin Bender, who died in 1965.
Bob was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, class of 1939. He then enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served as a Tec/5 with the 254th Infantry as a radio operator. Bob earned two bronze stars for serving in the Rhineland and Central Europe during World War II.
He was honorably discharged from the Army in January 1946.
Bob returned to civilian life and was employed at the former Heller Brothers Tool Company, Newcomerstown. He worked as a file cutter with Heller Brothers for 42 years until his retirement in 1983.
Bob was a longtime member of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Port Washington. With the church, he served as Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He also served as the church treasurer, as an elder, and was president of the consistory. Bob also served on the pulpit search committee.
He was also a member of the Tuscarawas County Senior Citizens and participated in the Heller Brothers golf leagues. Bob enjoyed woodworking and gardening as his favorite activities.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a son, Steven R. Bender, Hermitage, Pa., who died in 2007; and a daughter, Rebecca Lynn Bender, Mason, Mich., who died in 1995.
He was also the last member of his generation of the Bender family, as he was preceded in death by two brothers and their wives, Lloyd J. and Olive Bender, Port Washington, and Walter S. and Hazel Bender, Ashland.
Bob is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lelia V. Day Bender, Dover, whom he married on Nov. 16, 1943. Also surviving are his son and wife, Gregory D. and Sharon (Donnelly) Bender, Yorktown, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Marsha (Casteel) Bender, Strasburg; three grandsons, David and wife Marian Bender, Indianapolis, Kevin Bender, Yorktown, Va., and Kollin Bender, Yorktown, Va.; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Bender and husband Patrick Shaughnessy, Medina, and Kristine Bender, Washington, D.C.; and three great granddaughters, Jane Elizabeth Bender and Anna Grace Bender, both of Indianapolis, and Riley Shaughnessy, Medina. To honor Bob's requests, his remains are to be cremated.
No visiting hours will be observed.
Memorial services to celebrate Bob's life were Saturday, March 22, 2014, in the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. The Rev. Dr. Robert E. Buckley conducted the services.
Burial will follow at a later date this summer at Salem-Union Cemetery, Port Washington. That date will be announced later by the Ourant Funeral Home.
