"The Truth about Addiction"

The article about addiction by John Lowe in last week's Newcomerstown News aroused some questions in my mind. I've had many questions ever since people have decided to call alcoholism a disease.

My question is: "If one never takes that first drink, will he become an alcoholic?" No! Thus, it is in one's control not to become an alcoholic. Now consider diseases, polio, diphtheria, typhoid fever, caused by infected food or water, typhus fever, transmitted by fleas, lice, etc. and the big one, cancer! My son died of a brain tumor when he was only 18, could he have done anything to have prevented that? The only cancer that people may cause is by smoking, but even George Burns lived into his nineties and some who never smoke get lung cancer, otherwise most cancers are deadly and a surprise.

Now to drug addiction, if we teach young people to never take that first drug and they listen, will they become a drug addict? No! Remember Nancy Reagan, who made her motto to "just say No to drugs!"? What has happened? If we had listened, we would not have this big problem! Now what do we do? Do not teach it is a disease, as it is a choice and never start and if you did and you are addicted, you have a big fight on your hands and many are willing to help you, but you do not have a disease! We teach children not to play in the street, why? It's dangerous! Drugs are dangerous, just say No!, otherwise, you, the drug addict, now have a big problem and we all will help you, but you do not have a disease!
