Dave OssoNewcomerstown NewsDivision IV Sectional ChampionshipNewcomerstown 4, Central Catholic 3STRASBURG -- For the first time in the history of the school, the Newcomerstown Lady Trojans claimed the Division IV sectional championship Thursday night with a 4-3 win, in 13 innings, over the Tuscarawas Central Catholic Lady Crusaders to advance to the district tournament.The Trojans (17-10) will now square off with Strasburg on Thursday in the district semi-finals at Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School. Sophomore hurler Hannah Rexroad picked up the pitching win as she went all 13 innings, striking out six and walking just one, while giving up 11 hits."The sophomore was so poised," said Newcomerstown coach Lane Leedy. "She never got rattled and got outs when we needed them even though she had just six strikeouts. That left us with tons of plays to make and we made them. They never slipped up out there and our left fielder even saved a home run for us.""Our junior catcher (Andrea McWhorter) calls all the pitches," she added. "It was a great team playing a great team. Vinci (TCC pitcher Hannah Vinci) is the best pitcher in the Inter-Valley Conference and it came down to who took control."Newcomerstown jumped in front the fourth inning with Amber Gibson and McWhorter each cracking a single followed by a Kirstin Ritchie single to chase home Gibson for a 1-0 lead.The Trojans added two more in the fifth frame when Chelsea Fenton drew a walk and Brandi Crank moved her to second with a sacrifice. Jessie Rexroad then singled and Krystin Raach smacked a single to plate Fenton and Rexroad and give the hosts a 3-0 edge.TCC evened the score in the sixth inning pushing across three runs and the marathon was on as neither team could get enough offense going to score another run for the next six innings.In the bottom of the 13th frame, McWhorter got her second single of the game and after moving to second, junior first baseman and flex player, Rachel Cathey, who hadn't had an at-bat all season, got the call to go to the plate. She promptly delivered a line drive single to right-center field to send McWhorter home with the game-winning run and give Newcomerstown its first sectional championship.Vinci took the hard-luck loss in the circle for the Saints (14-7), fanning 10 and giving up three base-on-balls.Newcomerstown had a slight edge in hits (13-11) with Ritchie leading the way with three singles and an RBI. McWhorter, Gibson, Raach and Christy Felton each contributed a pair of singles with Raach driving in two runs. Ridgewood (15-9), who lost to Garaway twice in regular season play (2-1 and 2-0) advances to play in the district semi-finals against XXXX on Thursday at Cambridge City Park.The Generals used a four-run for all the offense they would get in the game. After trailing the Pirates, 1-0, Haley Kolmerten started things off with a double to bring home two runs. Kim Michael then came through with a two RBI base hit to give the Generals a 4-1 lead. Kolmerten was the winning pitcher as she struck out six while giving up five hits. Maria Koshmider, who had eight strikeouts, was tagged with the loss for Garaway (15-8).
