LEESVILLE -- Newcomerstown steamrolled Conotton Valley on Saturday, 47-7, and upped its record to above .500 at 5-4, including 3-3 in the Inter-Valley Conference. The win sets up a big showdown with arch-rival Ridgewood this Friday, as the Trojans look to derail the Generals from an outright IVC title and shot at the play-offs.
Josh Miller had a big day for the Orange and Black with 149 yards on 18 carries while Caleb Rankin ran for three scores and passed for two more. He finished the day with an 11-of-20 passing effort with no interceptions that netted 216 yards. The 462 yards of total offense was the Trojans best showing of the season.
Trojan head coach Eric Brock said, "It felt great to have everyone healthy again and get back in the win column. We're still on track for our goals this season and know we have our work cut out for us against Ridgewood. Today was a good solid effort on both sides of the ball and now we're in the right frame of mind to prepare for this week. We plan on giving it everything we've got."
Newcomerstown got on the board after Darian Arnold picked off a pass from quarterback Seth Rutledge. The Trojans rattled off two quick plays for six points as Rankin carried it in from the 10. T. J. Wright's extra point, one of five on the day, made it 7-0 only four minutes into the game.
After a Rocket punt, Newcomerstown marched 45 yards with Rankin connecting to Serafin Sanchez on a 32-yard scoring strike. The kick failed and the scoreboard read 13-0 at the 6:06 mark.
Another punt by Conotton Valley led to the Trojan's next score, a 57-yard drive the Josh Miller capped with a one-yard plunge to make it 20-0 as the first quarter ended.
The Trojans scored early in the second quarter when Rankin darted his way 13-yards to the big house, raising the lead to 27-0.
Conotton Valley found its way onto the board with an 80-yard drive soon after. Rutledge connected on passes of 20 and 15 yards along the way, while two 15-yard penalties against the Trojans got the ball to the 11 yard line. From there, Rutledge found Aaron Enold for six. Ian Jordan's extra point made it 27-7 with 8:02 left in the first half.
Newcomerstown wasn't done yet though as it took advantage of a failed Rocket punt. Starting at Conotton Valley's 35, the Trojans used seven plays to find paydirt. Rankin finished the drive with an 8-yard run to make it 33-7 by halftime.
The Trojans struck quickly in the third quarter. Ranking completed passes of 36 yards to Arnold and 30 more to Sanchez to get the ball to the Rocket five-yard line. Miller eventually popped over from the two to make it 40-7.
Newcomerstown's next series resulted in gold again when Rankin connected with Sanchez on a 17-yard aerial to close out scoring at 47-7.
The Trojan defense was equally as impressive, holding Conotton Valley (0-9, 0-6 IVC) to just 89 yards of total offense, including only two on the ground.
Rankin carried the ball 11 times for 59 yards while Mitch Osso finished with 27 yards on five carries. Sanchez led all receivers with four catches for 83 stripes. Matt Ayres hauled in three balls for 41 yards.
The Rocket's Rutledge was 13-of-36 on the day with one TD and one pick. Shawn Ball had seven receptions for 23 yards while Sam Rodriguez pulled in three for 29. Enold had only one catch for 11 markers but it was for a score.
