STRASBURG -- The Lady Trojans had just about everything going right on Saturday during a 5-2 win over the Lady Rockets in the Division IV Softball Sectional at Strasburg High School.
Newcomerstown displayed solid defense, good pitching and hit the ball. They were just missing one important factor - timely hitting - as they stranded a total of 11 base runners in the contest.
"We hit the ball well today," Trojan skipper John Dupke explained. "We just couldn't get the timely hit when we needed it. That's been a trend of late, and something we hope we can improve on."
One Lady Trojan who enjoyed a big day at the plate was sophomore Allie Hinton, who turned in a perfect 4-for-4 day which included the game's key hit.
With the score deadlocked at 1-1 entering the bottom of the third, Hinton belted a two-run home run to push the Lady Trojans out in front at 4-2. She then added a double and a pair of singles to her days work.
"Allie had a really big day," Dupke continued. "She really sort of broke the game open with that big home run. She's just been tearing it up all year at the plate for us."
In addition to Hinton, Taylor Postel chipped in with a single and double, while Meghann Mullane ripped a two-base hit as the winners tallied 10 hits.
Cydney McMillan picked up the win from the pitching circle for the Orange and Black, tossing a complete game with six strikeouts and just one walk.
Becca Jones doubled and singled to pace Conotton Valley (2-15), while Shelby Daugherty added a pair of singles.
Newcomerstown (13-7) next takes on Central Catholic in the sectional championship.
"We had a good performance today," Dupke said. "We're winning games despite having some trouble coming up with the timely hits, so I guess I should not be complaining."
