WEST LAFAYETTE -- A pair of 2-0 teams hooked up on Friday night as Martins Ferry came calling on the host Ridgewood Generals in a non-league match-up.
When the action concluded, it was the Purple Riders moving to 3-0 with a 38-23 victory over the Generals.
Marcus Sutton of Martins Ferry opened the scoring with a two-yard TD run at the 6:20 mark of the opening quarter, Sutton then ran in the PAT conversion for a quick 8-0 Ferry lead.
The Purple Riders pushed their lead to 24-0 with a pair of scores in the second quarter.
Brian Styles reached paydirt with a 13-yard run at the 7:10 mark, and Sutton then added his second TD of the first half with a 10-yard run with 2:33 before the intermission.
Ridgewood was able to get on the scoreboard before halftime, with junior QB Ryan Lowe hitting senior tight end C.J. Grove with a 25-yard touchdown pass with just 56 seconds left.
Alex Croston added the conversion run to pull the Orange and Black within 24-8 at the halftime break.
The Purple Riders put up the only points of the third stanza, with Cody Schau hauling in a short three-yard toss from Tyler Strama with 2:27 on the clock to extend the Martins Ferry lead to 32-8 heading to the fourth quarter.
Grove and Lowe hooked up for their second scoring play to open the final period, this one covering 20 yards at the 8:01 mark, with Garrett Bethel adding the PAT run to pull Ridgewood closer at 32-16.
Eric Flowers then tallied Martins Ferry's last score with a one-yard dive with 1:39 left in the contest.
Ridgewood continued to battle and was able to add a late score, with Billy Bailey racing 11 yards to the end zone with just three seconds remaining. Bret Mitchell added the PAT kick for the 38-23 final.
Styles finished with 90 yards on 11 carries for Martins Ferry, while Sutton added 51 yards in 11 attempts and Strama finished with a 10-for-16 passing performance for 153 yards.
Ridgewood (2-1) was led by Croston with 62 yards in eight totes, while Seth Bergeron chipped in with 30 yards in five carries. Lowe hit on just-5-of-18 passing attempts for 76 yards with three INTs, with Grove finishing with two catches for 45 yards and Dillon McPherson grabbing two receptions for 23 yards.
