MAGNOLIA -- Sandy Valley quarterback Sam Groff rushed for 231 yards and three scores as the host Cardinals steamrolled their way to a 35-12 victory over Newcomerstown in Inter-Valley Conference action on Friday.

As a team, Sandy Valley (3-1, 1-0 IVC) finished with 358 yards on 37 carries behind Groff's effort and 70 yards on six totes by Zach Bowling, who scored a pair of rushing touchdowns en route to the victory over the Trojans (1-3, 0-1 IVC).

The win improves Sandy Valley to 3-1 for the first time since 2002.

Newcomerstown received a solid performance from quarterback Austin Zufelt and Chandler Shryock as the duo combined to account for both scores by the Trojans.

Zufelt completed 16-of-33 pass attempts for 183 yards with Shryock being his favorite target as he tallied nine receptions for 118 yards.

Sandy Valley opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 64-yard run by Bowling. Jacob Wagner added the point-after kick to give the hosts an early 7-0 lead.

Newcomerstown cut the deficit to a single point in the second quarter on Shryock's first touchdown reception, a 14-yard strike from Zufelt. The point-after kick attempt failed, leaving the Trojans trailing 7-6.

The Cardinals' increased their lead to 14-6 in the same quarter on a six-yard run by Groff -- the first of three on the night. Wagner's point-after boot gave the hosts a 14-6 cushion.

The Trojans again rallied in the frame with a five-yard touchdown pass from Zufelt to Shryock, but the point-after pass attempt failed, leaving the visitors on the short-end of a 14-12 score.

Unfortunately for the Trojans, that was as close as they would get as Sandy Valley accounted for all three second half touchdowns.

The Cardinals scored the first on a five-yard run by Groff, who then added a 53-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The two point-after kicks gave the hosts a 28-12 lead heading into the final frame.

The game's final points came on a one-yard plunge by Bowling and Wagner's point-after kick. Newcomerstown rushed for 77 yards on 24 carries as a team. The Trojans finished with 15 first downs to 11 for the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Sandy Valley completed just 3-of-7 attempts for 16 yards. Neither team turned the ball over during the IVC contest.

Sandy Valley was flagged for 60 yards, while Newcomerstown was set back 40 yards during the game.
