A new voice is leading the Newcomerstown High golf team this season with Frank Ackerman taking over for Mark Wolf for the Trojans.
Ackerman has 15 years of varsity golf coaching experience, having previously coached at both Coshocton High and Ridgewood High. Ackerman led the Redskins golf program for seven years, followed by an eight-year stint with the Generals.
The Trojans return five lettermen from last year's team which posted a 4-10 record in dual matches.
"Our goal is to work had and improve from last year," Ackerman said. "With no seniors, we are building a new program."
Returning lettermen for the Trojans are led by a pair of two-year letterwinners in juniors Jared Brooks and Zach Gibson. Brooks posted an 45.8 average last year, while Gibson checked in with a 47.1 average for NHS.
"Both Jared and Zach are solid golfers," Ackerman offered. "I've named them as our captains this year due to their leadership abilities, I'm expecting big things from them this season."
Rounding out the returning lettermen for the Trojans are junior Lincoln Shaw and sophomores Tance Brandon and Codi Rothacher, who each are one-year lettermen.
"Posting that fourth score will be our biggest challenge," Ackerman added. "We are definitely a work in progress."
Rounding out the Trojans' seven-man roster for the season will be a pair of freshman in Bailey Guy and Brandan Tanksley.
"Both Bailey and Brandan are working hard and have improved over the summer," Ackerman explained. "They are in the mix for the 4-5-6 spots in our line-up."
In sizing up the race in the Inter-Valley Conference, Ackerman gives the early nod to Garaway.
"Garaway will once again be the team to beat this year," Ackerman said. "The IVC is probably the strongest league in the state and will continue to be."
Hickory Flats Golf Course will once again be the Trojans' home course this season.
