Wilfred Joseph "Bill" Evans, 77, of Newcomerstown, passed away late Monday night, Aug. 3, 2009, in the Grant Medical Center, Columbus, following a short illness.

Bill was born in Coshocton County on Oct. 26, 1931, a son of the late Frederick J. Evans, who died in 1952, and the late Mary V. Wiggins Evans, who died in 1988.

He was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, Class of 1949, and attended Kent State University and Hammel Actual College.

He was an Army veteran and served as a light vehicle driver and clerk during the Korean War. He was also a member of the 132nd Brigade Marching Band at Wolters AFB, Texas. After he returned to civilian life, Bill was employed with the State of Ohio Department of Transportation where he served as a property relocation specialist for new roads construction and a purchasing agent for many years before his retirement in 1993. Bill belonged to Christ United Methodist Church, Newcomerstown, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting and building model trains, watching and studying birds, and reading books on the history of the American automobile.

Bill was the last member of his generation of the Evans family, having been preceded in death by his brother, James William Evans, Cleveland, who died in 1999; and his sister, Rhea Lou Cacioppo, Tallmadge, who died in 1991. Also deceased are his brother-in-law, Dominic Cacioppo, Tallmadge, who died in 2007; and an infant niece and nephew.

Bill is survived by two nieces and three nephews, Dominique M. "Mimi" (Robert A.) Porter of Tallmadge, Melissa Brooker (Jim) Marino of Madison, Joseph C. (Maureen) Cacioppo of Munroe Falls, David A. (fiancé Tina Domen) of Brimfield and Mark C. (Tammy) Cacioppo of Munroe Falls; great-niece, Amanda L. Cacioppo of Munroe Falls; and great-nephews, Joshua R. Porter of Tallmadge, Christopher J. Brooker of Munroe Falls and Travis C. Cacioppo of Munroe Falls.

Funeral services to celebrate Bill's life were Aug. 8, 2009, in the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown.

Pastor Derek Hickman conducted the services.

Burial followed at West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown, where the Coshocton County Veterans' Council performed military graveside services.

The family requests that memorials be made in Bill's name to Christ United Methodist Church, 648 Oak St., Newcomerstown, OH 43832.
