COSHOCTON -- On Dec. 14, the Coshocton Business and Professional Women (BPW) had its drawing for the Winter Get Away to support the Wigs for Cancer program started in 2001 by Cathy Schlegel, owner of Country Clips. The winner for the Winter Get Away is Helen McClain; she purchased her ticket from BPW member Lori Hahn. The raffle cleared $708 to be donated totally to the Wigs for Cancer program.
This program started in 2001 by Schlegel and Julie Amore, who was inspired by Joyce Fry, a member of her golf league that was battling cancer. Schlegel would take care of the wigs and Amore organized the fund raising. Then Amore had cancer problems of her own and the program was left with no one to organize the fund raising. BPW donated $250 last year to the program and decided to hold a fund raiser this year, thus the Winter Get Away raffle. Thanks to Mr. Patel from Super 8 Motel for his contribution. A big thanks to all the people who sold the tickets and to those who purchased them. With their help we were able to donate $708 to the program. BPW is about women helping women and they felt this was another way they can support women in our community.
This program is for Coshocton County residents only but Schlegel gets referrals for Coshocton women from the Coshocton Oncology Department, James Cancer Center and Zanesville. Schlegel donates her time working with the women ordering and shaping their wigs. A very recent recipient said of her new wig, "This makes me fill more like myself as I go through this battle." Women have a lot to deal with battling cancer, hair loss being the most visible one. If a wig gives them confidence to face the other challenges, that is the least they can do for one another.
