Funeral services for James P. Stowers Sr., 84, of West Lafayette, were May 3, 2010, at the Addy Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. The Rev. Lloyd Tenney officiated the services with burial in the Peoples Community Church Cemetery, Newcomerstown. Military services were conducted by the Newcomerstown Veterans' Honor Guard. He passed away April 28 at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.

He was born April 3, 1926, in Virginia, the son of the late Mary Susan Whitaker.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, who served from June 17, 1948, until April 1, 1949.

Mr. Stowers was a carpenter by trade.

On April 19, 1949, he married June Pauline (Woodard) Stowers, who passed away March 9, 2010.

Besides his mother and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Eugene Stowers; one daughter, Wilma Juanita Stowers; and one brother, Paul Elija Stowers.

Survivors include one son, James P. Stowers Jr. of Marion; four daughters, Doris (Roland) Rankin of Chatsworth, Ga., Mary Sue (Michael) Moore of Newcomerstown, Erie Mae (James) Hampton of Gastonia, N.C., and Kris Lorine Taylor (Robert) Leland of Zanesville; 31 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
