The approximate $400,000 worth of personnel cuts made last month helped the Newcomerstown Board of Education finish the school year in the "black."

Newcomerstown Treasurer Dan Stocker said those cuts will also help with the following school year's finances as well.

"At this point in time, it looks like we'll finish next year in the 'black,'" Stocker said. "That was a concern for us and it's definitely a plus for the district."

Along with the personnel cuts, an increase in tax revenue received and less expenditures being paid out, also helped the district's finances.

In other business, the board approved May 11 the transfer of Shawn Dakin, assistant technology coordinator, to technology coordinator in preparation of Craig Collins' retirement at the end of the school year.

Dakin's contract is a three-year limited contract which runs through the end of the 2013 school year. His annual salary will be $68,017. He currently makes $54,076.
