Newcomerstown sinks River for first win
The Newcomerstown Trojans scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter Friday night to rally from a two-point deficit and post a 33-21 victory over the visiting River Pilots.
Trailing 21-19 entering the final quarter, Newcomerstown (1-1) scored on a 12-yard touchdown run by Marquece "Bubba" Harris with 11:52 to play and a 22-yard pass from Darian Arnold to Chandler Shryock with 2:48 remaining to secure the victory.
River (0-2) failed to score in the second half after posting a 21-13 lead at the intermission.
The Pilots opened the scoring less than a minute into the game when Garth Richter scooped up a Newcomerstown fumble and raced 25 yards to paydirt.
Tanner Wright added the point-after kick for an early 7-0 River lead.
River wasted little time in finding the end zone again in the opening quarter when Austin McConn scored on a three-yard run with 6:34 to play. Wright's PAT kick increased the visitor's lead to 14-0 before a stunned Newcomerstown audience.
Newcomerstown found the end zone for the first time with 2:55 on the first quarter clock when quarterback Darian Arnold scored on a 13-yard run. Arnold added the point-after kick to cut the deficit to 14-7.
The Trojans continued to close the gap when Harris scored on a six-yard run late in the second quarter to pull Newcomerstown within one at 14-13. The point-after kick failed.
River answered the challenged with a scoring drive that was finished off by a one-yard plunge by McConn, who finished with 21 yards on nine carries.
Wright converted the point-after kick to give River a 21-13 cushion.
Newcomerstown's Harris scored the first of two touchdowns in the second half on a five-yard run with 4:58 to play in the third frame. A two-point attempt by the hosts failed, leaving the Trojans trailing by 21-19.
Harris' second score -- the 12-yard run -- put Newcomerstown in the lead for good before Arnold found Shryock for two points and a 27-21 lead.
For Newcomerstown, Arnold tallied 59 yards on 23 carries while completing 12 pass attempts for 202 yards and a touchdown to Shryock, who finished with six receptions for 99 yards.
Billy Mardis added 63 receiving yards on three catches and Matt Ayres tallied 24 yards on a pair of receptions. On the ground, Paul Mathews finished with 35 yards on four carries and Brice Shearer added 33 on seven totes.
River was paced by James West with 38 rushing yards on 11 carries while Cody Caldwell completed 9-of-21 pass attempts for 68 yards. Zach Caretti was his leading receiver with four catches for 47 yards while McConn tallied three catches for 49 yards.
Defensively, Serafin Sanchez tallied a pair of interceptions and Nathan Watson recovered a River fumble.
