Division III District Semi-final

St. Clairsville 6, Ridgewood 2

WARSAW -- The Generals fell for the second straight season in the Division III district finals to just miss a berth in the regionals. This year it was to the Red Devils by a 6-2 count at River View High School on Thursday.

Ridgewood landed the game's first run in the bottom of the first but failed to land a decisive blow. Trent Lingo cracked a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an overthrow by the catcher who attempted a pick-off.

But the Generals left the bases loaded after a strikeout and groundout, and led just 1-0 after the first inning.

St. Clairsville (16-3) scored twice in the second despite having only one hit. The team took advantage of three walks by Lingo before getting an RBI single and sacrifice fly to take the lead, 2-1.

In the bottom of the second, the Generals tied when both Landon Smith and Lingo struck out but reached base on wild pitches. A Brian McElhaney sacrifice fly scored Smith.

The Red Devils broke the tie with an RBI single from Michael Androsko in the third, followed by three runs in the fourth to put some distance between the teams.

In the fourth inning, Lingo, who was tagged with the loss, was replaced by Thomas Ellis. He gave up a two-run double and RBI single to make it 6-2 in the Red Devil's favor. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

Junior Sam Vincenzo picked up the win for St. Clairsville as she gave up just four hits while striking out nine and walking two. Vincenzo settled down after some early erratic pitching and at one point retired 14 Generals batters in a row before Lingo got a single with two outs in the seventh.

C.J. Grove also had a double for the Generals, who stand at 22-8 with one make-up game to go.

Ellis got win after finishing out the last five innings in relief of Trent Lingo. Ellis also clubbed a home run for the Generals while Dakota Albertson came through with a two-run double and scored on a double-steal in the third inning that gave Ridgewood a 5-4 lead.
