DOVER -- The Union Hospital Respiratory Care Department has again earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). The hospital in Dover is one of only 700 of the 5,000 hospitals in the nation to receive this recognition.
The AARC recognition program is designed to help patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals. Those receiving the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition ensure patient safety by agreeing to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services.
The Respiratory Care Department at Union Hospital includes 24 staff members who care for in patients including newborns in the Nursery, children in Pediatrics, and adults in all of the inpatient units and the Emergency Department of the hospital. Respiratory Therapist provide oxygen therapy and breathing treatments, blood samples for analysis, provide patient education and pulmonary rehabilitation. Respiratory therapists respond to emergency and trauma situations.
The Union Hospital Respiratory Care staff is on duty around the clock at Union Hospital providing support to nurses and physicians. The Outpatient Pulmonary Diagnostics Lab is certified by the American Thoracic Society testing patients Monday through Friday by appointment.
The department's medical director is William Swoger, DO, Board Certified pulmonologist. Allen Corbett of New Philadelphia is the manager of Respiratory Care and the Sleep Center. Gary Crowthers of Brightwood is the director of the Cardiopulmonary Departments.
