MALVERN -- Heartbreak!!!

Homestanding Malvern High's Anthony Ruegg booted a 29-yard field goal with no time on the clock to lift the Hornets to a 10-7 win over Newcomerstown in Inter-Valley Conference action on Friday.

Following a scoreless opening period, Malvern's Cobin Plessinger found the end zone from one yard out at the 9:42 mark of the second quarter. Ruegg's PAT kick put the hosts up ,7-0.

The lead was short lived, however, as the Trojans answered with a 17-yard run by Bril Dansby just four minutes after the Malvern tally. Newcomerstown's Austin King booted a successful extra-point to knot the score at 7-7 and set the stage for the nearly scoreless, knock-down, drag-out second half.

The contest's final stats were nearly as close as the game was, with the hosts managing just one more first down than the Trojans (14-13).

Malvern (6-2, 4-1 IVC) rushed for 164 yards and threw for 106. The Trojans (4-4, 2-3 IVC) rushed for 150 and added 82 passing yards.

Malvern's Plessinger finished the contest with 159 yards on 23 carries. Dansby paced the Trojans' ground game with 92 yards on 16 carries.

Newcomerstown signal-caller Austin Zufelt connected on six-of-seven aerial attempts, with Cody Hall hauling in three of those completions for 47 yards.
