Gaskill graduates from Northwest Ohio Medical University

ROOTSTOWN -- Cassie Gaskill of Newcomerstown was one of 201 health professionals to graduate from Northeast Ohio Medical University during its commencement ceremony on May 16 at The University of Akron's E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Center.

Dr. Gaskill was awarded a Doctor of Pharmacy. Dr. Gaskill will pursue at Discount Drug Mart in Carrolton. Dr. Gaskill is a graduate of Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Families and friends of all graduates packed EJ Thomas Hall to help celebrate their journeys to become the next generation of doctors, pharmacists and health care professionals. Following Commencement, audience members could not contain their excitement as they rushed to congratulate the new graduates.

As part of the event, the University presented an honorary degree to Louis Sullivan, M.D., chairman and CEO of The Sullivan Alliance to Transform the Health Professions and former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Sullivan also served as the commencement speaker, where he shared perspectives on serving the community and the qualities needed to become exceptional leaders in the health care profession.

"The health professions are dynamic and ever-changing," said Dr. Sullivan. "To be relevant and effective in the future, means discovering new facts and developing new tools every day. It means discarding what is no longer true or relevant due to advances in our knowledge of human biology and in technology."

The Commencement ceremony also marked the President's Lifetime Achievement Award, which was awarded for the first time in NEOMED's history. The honor was bestowed upon Richard W. Lewis, director of governmental relations and secretary to the board of Trustees at NEOMED. The prestigious award is given to an individual who exemplifies excellence and incorporates NEOMED's highly regarded six "Cs"- competence, communication, caring, curiosity, character and community.
