Democrat gubernatorial candidate Richard Cordray appeals to blue-collar workers' fears over the high-tech evolution of the workplace — and their job security — in a new television commercial that began airing Friday.
The 30-second statewide spot, which features Cordray inside a factory speaking with workers, comes with only slightly more than four weeks remaining until Ohioans decide between Cordray and Republican Mike DeWine for governor.
In a departure from recent attack ads that have dominated both campaigns, the Cordray spot is purely issues-oriented.
"Every day I talk to people who feel like a good job is out of reach if you didn’t go to college," he says. "Some jobs do require a degree, but so many others just require good skills and training. That’s why it’s my priority to expand vocational and career training programs ... Because I believe you shouldn’t need a college degree to be part of the middle class."
Both Cordray and DeWine have stressed they will upgrade Ohio's workforce development programs to help erode "skills gaps" and help people gain jobs, then move onto new, higher-paying ones, as governor.
