Master Sgt. Smith retires from Air ForceA retirement party for Master Sgt. Ralph D. Smith, the son of Ralph and Shirley Smith of Newcomerstown, took place Nov. 28 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Newcomerstown.The party was given by his family, friends and siblings who are John Smith, Michael Smith and Shari Grewell.Family members also traveled to Little Rock, Ark., in September for a retirement ceremony. Those attending the ceremony included John Smith, Michael Smith, Shari Grewell and children Kimberly and Daniel, Ralph and Shirley Smith, and his uncle, Harold Smith.Master Sgt. Smith first entered the United States Air Force on June 16, 1987. Over the years, he has been awarded many major awards and decorations including Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Aerial Achievement Medical with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medical with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, AF Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Device with ten oak clusters, AF Good Conduct Medal with six oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, AF Overseas Ribbon Short, AF Overseas Ribbon Long, Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border, AF Longevity Service with four oak leaf clusters, USAF NCO PME Graduate Ribbon with oak leaf clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon (Rifle), AF Training Ribbon, and Kuwait Liberation Medal Government of Kuwait.Master Sgt. Smith culminates 22 years, five months and 15 days of loyal and dedicated service to his country and the United States Air Force. His official retirement date was Nov. 30, 2009.
