It feels good this time of year to focus on all of the wonderful things about this Christmas season. And we do have a lot to celebrate. There’s the joy, the giving, the warmth, the gatherings and most certainly the overabundance of cheesy romantic movies that fill our homes from November through January.

But the truth is that achieving the holidays at that level isn’t always easy, and often finds me surrounded by scraps of paper with tape in my hair, wishing for elves. I absolutely stink at making cookies and when my family doesn’t eat them all, I get cranky. I’m also horrible at decorating, sending cards, dressing fancy and pretty much most things that go along with the holiday season.

And while I do my very best to be holly jolly and spread cheer and festively shaped cheeseballs, sometimes I just need to blow off some steam and let it all out.

(Cue the Grinch, Scrooge on background harmonies, sorry, Julie Andrews.)

Boxes of knickknacks

Hauled up from the basement.

A snowman collection

And nowhere for placement.

We lost one of the Nativity set kings.

These are my least favorite holiday things.

Lights that don’t work

And ornaments galore.

Pine needs falling

All over the floor.

Stabbing your bare feet, oh the words I do sing!

These are my least favorite holiday things.

Remembering to buy

For all boys and all girls,

No wrapping paper,

Six-inch ribbon curls.

We run out of tape and we run out of strings.

These are my least favorite holiday things.

When I’m shopping

?When I’m wrapping

When I’m feeling sad?

I simply remember I made it last year

And then I don’t feel so bad.

Every minute is filled

With some sort of plans.?

Eating cookies and hoping?

The chefs washed their hands.

Not knowing what gives them that faint extra zing,

?These are my least favorite holiday things.

The elf on the shelf,

Outdoor lighting woes,

Kissing your aunts*

?Underneath mistletoes.

Their lipstick it smudges, their spit how it flings.

These are my least favorite holiday things.

Last minute shopping

And last minute sales.

My poor Christmas tree

?Looks like Pinterest fails.

Getting dressed up in fancy sweaters with bling,**?

These are my least favorite holiday things.

When I’m tired?

When I’m crazy

When I’m feeling sad.

I take a deep breath, hug my husband and kids,

And then I don’t feel so bad.

*My aunts are actually all pretty awesome.

** I don’t really own any blingy sweaters. (Honesty, folks. Santa’s watching.)?
