BALTIC -- A horse-drawn buggy was struck by a car on New Year's Day, leaving a 6-month-old infant in "guarded" condition at Akron Children's Hospital.

According to reports, the accident occurred at about 5 p.m. Thursday on Route 93 near Baltic.

Roseann D. Mast, 6-month-old daughter of David W. and Susan E. Mast of Baltic, reportedly suffered a head injury and was listed in guarded condition at Akron Children's Hospital.

She and her 33-year-old father, the buggy's driver, were both taken by helicopter to Akron, where he was treated in Akron General Hospital.

Officials said there were eight people riding in the buggy when it was hit about two miles northeast of Baltic.

Susan Mast, 32, was treated in Pomerene Hospital at Millersburg, along with the couple's 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. Three of their other children were treated at the scene.

The family's horse was seriously injured and had to be put down.

The car's driver, Daniel F. Boone Jr., 63, West Lafayette, told officials he never saw the buggy because of a sharp curve and the sun was in his eyes. The posted speed limit there is 55 mph, and the car hit the southbound buggy from the rear. Boone was driving the car of passenger Barbara G. Preston, 55, Dalton.

Officials said alcohol was not involved.
