NEWCOMERSTOWN -- "There's so much available that people just don't know about," said Journey's End Ministries Director Janet Gore about all of the government-assisted programs out there. With that reasoning and the fact that Journey's End wants to continually expand their services they offer Newcomerstown area residents, they now provide the Eligibility Gateway (E-Gateway) program here in Newcomerstown rather than driving to New Philadelphia or even Columbus. The Web-based system accepts applications directly from The Ohio Benefit Bank (OBB), a counselor-assisted program that connects low- and moderate-income Ohioans with access to potential public benefits and work supports. The E-Gateway enables a case manager at a local Job and Family Services office to import data from the OBB applications into the state's eligibility system. Linda Rochester, a volunteer counselor at Journey's End, said the initial application or "quick check" process takes only about five minutes if all paper work is brought in at the time of the visit. She said that's how they can check for eligibility in certain state and federal programs. That way, they can see exactly what they qualify for.The items needed for a visit, include total income of everyone working in the household, total medical bills per month, proof of income (not earned including disability, Medicare, etc.), an itemized income, utility bills and rent/mortgage payment information. Gore said Journey's End Ministries' goal is to have their clients become aware and see if they are eligible for food stamps, senior citizen help and assistance, nutritional help for children, child care assistance, heating and cooling assistance, medical benefits (including Medical Card), prescription benefits and Healthy Start for children. Gore also said that many citizens don't realize that they actually qualify for many government programs. For example, if you are a household of four people and your yearly income is less than $44,099, then you may qualify for government-assisted programs. Journey's End Ministries is offering the quick check during their regular hours of operation, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. However, for a more in-depth application, call for an appointment at 498-5772.Journey's End Ministries is one of nine sites across Tuscarawas County that is offering the E-Gateway system since its launch in January 2009.
