The winner in the Newcomerstown Mayoral Democratic Primary election remains the same even after a recount. James A. Friel received 131 votes to opponent James Earl McCormick's 123 votes.

McCormick requested a recount of three Newcomerstown precincts at a cost of $150 ($50 per precinct).

During the certification process last Tuesday, it was noted that McCormick had gained two votes from provisional ballots, while Friel had gained only one. Unofficial results posted election night May 3 had Friel winning by nine votes, 130-121.

McCormick had five days to file a request for a recount after the election results were certified May 17.

Now, Friel will face independent candidate Dave Hickman in the November general election. Hickman filed a petition with the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections to seek the mayor's position by the May 2 deadline. However, the elections board has until July 15 to certify and verify the petition.

Meanwhile, write-in candidates have until Aug. 29 to file their petitions.

Incumbent Mayor Steven B. Guy, a Republican, isn't seeking another term and no other Republican filed for the primary race.

The new four-year term for mayor begins Jan. 1, 2012, with a current salary of $10,000.
