The bicentennial for Newcomerstown is still two years away but the committee is urging members of the community to get involved now.
According to committee co-chairperson, Pat Cadle said the committee has been meeting every month since April of this year. He said at this point, the committee is anticipating being able to present some type of social event each month for the year 2014.
But being able to do that will depend on the communitys support and involvement, he said.
They also hope to get as many local businesses involved as possible.
Jeff Neidig, owner of Medi-Wise Pharmacy in Newcomerstown and president of the Newcomerstown Rotary Club, is encouraging all of the areas local organizations to also get involved.
According to Cadle and committee member Joel Styer, the committee is in the process of establishing the celebrations logo and theme.
Once we get that developed, we can really take off with this, Styer said.
Cadle said the committees mission statement is Newcomerstowns bicentennial is Celebrating with pride, our history, our present, and the legacy of our future.
The community can start getting involved by attending the monthly meetings (date, time and place to be announced in the Newcomerstown News or via the Internet on Facebook). The community can also access up-to-date information via the Internet site known as Facebook. The search for Facebook is: Newcomerstown Bicentennial. The committee is asking Facebook users to also select the like option for the Newcomerstown Bicentennial Facebook page.
Cadle said the main goal at this moment is to get as many people on board as possible. We need physical support as well as monetary support to make this celebration the best it can be.
Those individuals that are not physically able can still be of assistance by contributing monetarily, if they are able. The committee is also asking the community to go through family photo albums, scrapbooks, search their attics or basements and contribute items for the displays that will be used. All items must be marked with owners name and phone number so that the items can be returned. Photos will be copied and returned to the owner. For information on contributing, individuals can contact Cadle via Facebook, Internet (email@example.com), or phone 330-827-0636.
He adds that the committee also wants to hear from anyone that has memories from grandparents or older relatives.
We want to capture and preserve these memories and family folk lore so it can be passed on to Newcomerstowns future generations, Cadle said.
The committee consists of the following: Pat Cadle and Bill Mc Culley, co-chairpersons; Jeff Neidig, Joel Styer, Judy Lehman Wilcox, Kay Dennis, Gary and Janet Chaney, Denny and Marlene Ross, Corey and Debbie Rehard, Jim Friel, Burris Gardner, Kristy Ferrell Tipton, Christy McMillan, Leah Beitzel, Millie Schwab, Roger Seitz, Bill Cochran, Ken Hacker, members.
