DAR has March meeting
CAMBRIDGE -- The Anna Asbury Stone Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution recently met for its March meeting at Theo's Restaurant.
Mary Lou Eagleson led the meeting. Cooke Connell led prayer.
In honor of President's Day, Patricia Lanning presented the DAR president general's report on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln's contributions to America.
Marianne Dakin reported on the three book volume, "America's Women in the Revolutionary Era 1760-1790: A History Through Bibliography." The books are based on factual documents rather than oral histories. The group hopes to purchase the books to donate to a local library.
Kacie Leonard presented a report by Army Chief of Staff Raymond T. Odierno concerning the planned drawdown of U.S. soldiers by the Department of Defense.
Bernice Litt reviewed the minutes from the February meeting. She presented the biography of Anna Asbury Stone, the group's namesake.
Mary Davis reported on the group's treasury funds.
Next meeting will be in June.
Beginner Genealogy Classes starting
DENNISON -- The Tuscarawas County Genealogy Society met March 5 for its executive and regular meetings.
Irene Walter presided over the executive meeting and Jon Baker conducted the regular meeting.
Virginia Cassady said the 2011 membership and surname directory would be ready soon.
President Jon Baker is conducting Beginner Genealogy Classes at the Dover Public Library March 10, 24 and the 31. The first class will cover using a five generation chart starting with yourself and working backwards with what you already know. Then using bible records and talking to family members. The second class will cover using primary records such as Birth, Death, Marriage, and other local available records. The last class will be about using online resources and newspaper obits and articles.
Irene Walter presented the program by discussing some books about the unusual occupations of persons found in the 1880 census records. She also discussed the Two Volume set of Books done by Leroy Beachy in 2011 entitled, "The Story of the Amish"
The next meeting will be April 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the society library in Dennison.
