The Memorial Day Service will take place in Newcomerstown on Monday, May 28 at 11 a.m. at the West Lawn Cemetery.
The services are sponsored by the American Legion Post 431, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3303, and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 532.
The Master of Ceremonies will be Dennis Belle, the adjutant of the American Legion and VFW.
The Newcomerstown High School speaker will be Caleb Fenton, a graduate of the Newcomerstown Class of 2012, and the son of Mr. Gary and Mrs. Heather Fenton. He plans on attending Kent State University and majoring in Construction Management.
The main speaker will be Vane Scott III, a U.S. Navy veteran and son of the late Vane and Barbara Scott. He will be delivering his father's last speech that was presented at the Veterans' Day observance at the Tuscarawas County Court House Nov. 11, 2009. It was a moving speech about veterans and Memorial Day.
The Honor Guard, veterans in attendance, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, others and the Newcomerstown Marching Band will march into the West Lawn Cemetery at 10:50 a.m.
The 2012 program will include prayers by the Rev. Donald Silverthorn, music by the Newcomerstown High School Band (under the direction of Joel Hillwig) and the Newcomerstown Veterans' Honor Guard commanded by Dennis Ross. They will perform the posting and retrieval of the colors and the Salute to the Dead honoring all those who gave their lives in service to their country and all veterans who have served.
The public is invited. Bring your own lawn chairs as there are no chairs provided.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremonies will take place at the Newcomerstown Middle School.
