In an effort to generate more money for cancer research -- and keep items dry from the yearly rainstorm -- the Newcomerstown Relay For Life live auction will take place Friday, June 1 (prior to the Newcomerstown Relay For Life June 15-16). The auction will take place at the David Barber Civic Center in Newcomerstown. The auction will start at 5 p.m. and doors open at 3:30 p.m. for viewing.
Organizer Dave Archer said he wanted to have the auction separate from other Relay events in the hopes to generate more money and to have bidders be more awake for bidding. In year's past, the auction took place Saturday morning which came after a night-filled with events and games, and many people were too tired to participate.
"It's a charity auction and people always bid more for charity," Archer said in the hopes of generating more money.
He said he has been soliciting for quality auction items since February.
Some of those items include: Autographed items, autographed Founder's Day Longaberger basket, signed breast cancer painting, antique mantle clocks, Longaberger pottery, blanket, handmade queen-size quilt, tour of the Amish Farm at Walnut Creek, handmade cedar chest with cherry legs, gift certificates, 18-holes of golf, R2D2 Star Wars cooler, Rhino liner installed and donated by Mike's Body Shop, two Ohio State University football tickets, Cleveland Browns tickets, oil change certificate, sofa bed with twin size bed, console table with matching mirror, entertainment center with 19-inch television, OSU Adirondack chair, Global digital video camera and carry case, car wash certificate, lottery tree, and much, much more.
In all, Archer hopes to have more than 130 items.

Auctioneers Steve Cronebaugh of Stone Creek and Tim Sparks of Newcomerstown have donated their time for the auction.
Archer urges those that are coming to the auction to bring their truck. There is a lot of "quality" items up for bids, including furniture.
He said they are still accepting items clear up to the time of the auction. To donate, contact Archer at 330-364-8874. All proceeds benefit the Newcomerstown Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society.
