NEW PHILADELPHIA -- The 2013 Union Hospital Run for Home will once again feature an appearance by the reigning Miss Ohio.
The Run for Home Road Runners Club announced today that 2012 Miss Ohio, Elissa McCracken, will join the festivities at the Union Hospital Run for Home April 14 at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia.
Miss McCracken will participate in a variety of activities at the Run for Home including the presentation of ribbons to participants in the Kids' Run and finishers' medals at the finish line of the half-marathon and team-relay.
"We want to thank Martha Campbell and the Miss Clayland Pageant bringing Miss Ohio back to the Run for Home," said Run for Home Road Runners Club President Matt Ritzert.
Miss McCracken is a 21-year old pharmacy student at Ohio Northern University in Ada, where she is pursuing a doctorate in pharmacy.
She has just completed her third year of the rigorous six year program.
At ONU, she is a member of the President's Club and the Zeta Kappa Chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority.
She is also a member of Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity where she served as Chair of Graduate Relations for two years.
Miss McCracken's personal platform, "Stop Cyberbullying" is a result of her own painful experiences with such mistreatment, most of which affected her in her middle school years. She has been invited to speak to student groups about her experiences where she explains her battle against the bullies, the steps all students can use to become bully free and the path she took to become a survivor of cyberbullying.
"We believe the appearance by Miss Ohio adds a special touch to the Run for Home," Ritzert added
Run for Home organizers are expecting more than 12-hundred people to participate in the Union Hospital Run for Home events including the 13.1 mile half-marathon, three-person team relay, one-mile fun run/walk, five mile walk and kids' run.
Registration for all Run for Home events is now underway.
More registration information is available at www.runforhome.org.
In addition to the running and walking events April 14, the weekend will include a health and fitness fair in the Tuscora Park Pavilion on Saturday, April 13 from 2 to 6 p.m. and a pasta dinner in the Park Place Teen Center adjacent to the pavilion Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.
The health and fitness fair continues Sunday from 10 a.m. until the start of the races at 1 p.m.
The Run for Home benefits the Tuscarawas Valley Habitat for Humanity.
Last year's event raised $26,000 for the organization which plans to begin construction of a new home this spring.
