Cheerleaders selected

Tryouts took place Friday, March 8 for Newcomerstown Middle School cheerleaders for the 2013-2014 school year.

Congratulations goes out to the following young ladies:

Seventh grade football -- Deserae Harbold, Hannah Kennedy, Gabby McPeek, and Sarah Montgomery.

Eighth grade football -- Kendrah Felton, Erica Maldonado, Alli Scott-Hoopingarner, Cheyenne Tanksley, Amaris Wells, and Jaimie Wright.

Seventh grade basketball -- Haley Moffett, Emily Moffett, and Sarah Montgomery.

Eighth grade basketball -- Breana Bryant, Caitlin Durr, Kendrah Felton, Erica Maldonado, Alli Scott-Hoopingarner, Cheyenne Tanksley, and Jaimie Wright.

Olympiad team wins

Newcomerstown Middle School Science Olympiad Team participated in the Akron Regional Tournament on March 9 held at Akron University.

There were 18 teams that participated which included a total of 270 students from various schools in Ohio.

Coaches Tara Supers and Donna Yoder, took the following team members to the competition.

Sixth grade team: Rees Creager, Dylan Garretson, Emma Moore, and Sarah Montgomery.

Seventh grade: Kylie Butler, Noah Creager, Austin Gano, Brea Garretson, and Brody Lehman.

Eighth grade: George Brode, Bailey Guy, Rachel Hinton, Sam Kirker, Kate Montgomery, and Amber Moore.

Events that the team placed in:

Write It Do It - sixth place medal and ribbon winner -- Amber Moore and Kylie Butler.

Helicopters - seventh place -- Kate Montgomery and Austin Gano.

Meteorology - tenth place -- Sarah Montgomery and Kate Montgomery.

Jump-a-thon set

Newcomerstown Middle School students participated in the PACCT Jump-a-thon and Hoops for Heart on Friday, Feb. 22.

Students raised a total of $610.40 for the American Heart Association during their event.

Students spent their Related Arts periods jumping rope, competing in some jump rope contests and basketball contests, and challenging Mr. Peoples in basketball.

Overall, top fundraisers were eighth grader Carra Popadak with $151 and seventh grader Daniel Russell with $80.

The eighth grade raised the most money earned a reward dance for bringing in the most money with $315.19.
