WEST LAFAYETTE -- Women from Coshocton County gathered on May 4, 9 and 11 to work on the Habitat Home being built for the Grant family in West Lafayette. This was the second Women Build locally and the sixth annual National Women Build Week. During the week of May 4-12, more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide hosted women build projects in partnership with Lowe's, the underwriter of Habitat's Women Build Program.
National Build Week challenges women to come together and devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 41,000 women volunteers from all 50 states have participated in previous years, building 2,100 Habitat houses nationwide. This is the second Women Build event for Habitat in Coshocton County.
Lowe's contributes nearly $2 million to National Women Build Week and provides a $5,000 gift card to more than 300 participating affiliates. They have pledged $20 million to Habitat through their five-year initiative.
In addition to funding they also conduct "How-To" clinic at local store to teach women key construction skills that will empower them to support Habitat projects across the country.
Nearly 356 volunteers have given their time and talent to the home being built in West Lafayette for the Grant family. There were more than 150 women who worked on construction alone. Many other volunteers provided food and beverages, tents, equipment and moral support.
On the first day of the build, all four walls were in place. The second work day with trusses in place. On the last official work day, some roof sheeting was done, windows and door openings were cut with most of the windows then installed. The volunteers also began installing siding along with framing and erecting interior walls.
As with all Habitat built homes, they have various fund raising activities. This year's funding is below what we need by nearly $30,000. Anyone wishing to donate, should send checks to Habitat for Humanity of Coshocton County at 1035 Walnut St. If donating as a sponsor to one of the 16 teams, they ask that you indicate the team name on checks. This year we are also suggesting a donation in memory of or in honor of a military person. Include the name and branch of service, as all names will be written on the walls of the home.

They always need office assistance, help in the ReStore and ongoing work on our projects. They are currently looking for anyone with some spare time to do odd jobs on the unfinished home.
