DOVER -- Union Hospital in Dover announced that is has achieved national accreditation from DNV Healthcare, the newest and first Medicare-approved hospital accreditation program that integrates the ISO 9001 quality management system with the Medicare hospital standards. DNV requires the hospital to evaluate the process of patient care throughout the hospital and take measured steps to improve when it is warranted.
"The DNV program is consistent with our long-term commitment to patient safety and total quality," said Carey Gardner, director of community relations. "This is a new approach to hospital accreditation in a very long time. The ability to merge the ISO 9001 quality process with our clinical and financial improvements is a major step forward."
Gardner explained that ISO 9001 is an international quality management standard that applies to all types of organizations regardless of size or whether they produce a product or provide a service. ISO 9001 standards of quality are recognized and respected throughout the world.
Gardner said Union Hospital was among the first hospitals in Ohio to achieve DNV accreditation when it was initially received in 2009. He said DNV surveyors evaluate the care of patients provided by hospital departments and patient care areas. The survey is unannounced in advance and hospital staff does not know when the surveyors will arrive.
C. Jason Deeds of Dover, chairman of the hospital's Board of Trustees, thanked the hospital staff and physicians for their efforts that resulted in a successful DNV accreditation outcome.
The DNV accreditation is another important indicator of Union Hospital's commitment to quality. It requires a hospital-wide effort to continuously meet quality standards and improve the quality of Union Hospital's level of care. The Board of Trustees appreciates these efforts on the part of hospital leadership, physicians and the staff. In the process, it is gratifying that we have obtained accreditation by DNV and also met ISO standards.
Gardner said being accredited allows Union Hospital to receive payment for patients covered by Medicare and Medicaid. The accreditation period is three years.
