A Kimbolton man whose vehicle crashed into an ad hoc, ATV-riding mower rig in April was sentenced on Friday, Oct. 18 in Guernsey County Common Pleas Court. A pair of teenagers were injured in the crash and one, Brandon Pethtel, 14, died later the same day.
Thomas D. Nugent, 29, was sentenced by Judge David E. Ellwood to a total of six years in prison -- three years for leaving the scene of an accident and three years for tampering with evidence.
Prior to the sentencing, the family read a statement addressed to the judge and the defendant.
According to reports, the teenagers were traveling on Old 21 Road, near Route 541, just after midnight on April 13. They were riding on an unlighted, unlicensed rig in which a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle was towing a riding mower.
Nugent's vehicle struck the rig and then fled the scene. Nugent was arrested as a result of a tip from a citizen. His damaged vehicle was found in a barn comparatively close to the crash scene.
