FRANKLIN, IND. -- A 10-point spurt inside the midpoint of the opening half spurred the host Franklin College Lady Grizzlies to a 14-point lead and they never looked back in rolling to a 71-50 win over the visiting Muskingum University Lady Fighting Muskies in the opener of the Franklin Tip-Off Classic Saturday evening.
The Lady Muskies (0-1) managed to shave the difference to six (20-14) with a six-point run with 1:51 remaining in the opening half, but the Lady Grizzlies closed out the half with a 6-2 run to take a 26-16 lead to the locker room at the halftime intermission.
Franklin utilized a nine-point run of unanswered points to push the margin to 19 (51-32) with 7:36 to go and added to the difference building a 22-point spread by the 5:19 juncture and the Lady Muskies couldn't get the margin under 20 the remainder.
A pair of charity tosses by Riley Achenbach with 1:37 to go made the difference 71-48 and freshman Shelbi VanMeter dropped in a lay up with just seven ticks left to provide the 71-50 final.
Muskingum shot 41.9 percent from the field (18-of-43) and added 12-of-14 from the bonus line. VanMeter, off the bench, paced the Lady Muskies with 14 points while Taylor Maurer added 10, Olivia Besancon eight and point guard Angela Darnley six points.
Franklin (1-0) hit at a 42.3 percent clip from the floor (22-of-52) but made a big difference at the charity stripe canning 23-of-28. The Lady Grizzlies got balanced scoring led by Lauren DeSutter with 13 points. Katie Brewer, Achenbach and Nichole Thompson added eight points each, while Lindsey Dall, Lexi Ingram and Sarah Taylor chipped in with seven points each.
Franklin posted a 32-26 advantage on the boards paced by Thompson with eight with Brewer adding five. Sophomore Mallory Taylor (Cambridge) led the Lady Muskies on the glass with six rebounds with VanMeter adding four.
Muskingum had just five assists and collected 10 steals with Maurer and Darnley grabbing three each. Taylor also had three of Muskingum's four blocked shots, while the Lady Muskies were guilty of 25 turnovers and committed 21 fouls.
The Lady Grizzlies dished out 15 assists led by Dall with four and picked off 11 steals with three players collecting two each. Franklin committed 20 turnovers and were whistled for 19 fouls.
