NEW PHILADELPHIA -- The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will host its first annual Bookin' It 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m. with a route that begins and ends at its main library located at 121 Fair Ave. NW, New Philadelphia.

The library race is an 80s themed race. Runners and walkers are encouraged to dress in 80s attire and plan on enjoying 80s tunes along the route.

"Runners interested in participating can stop into one of our five locations (Bolivar, New Philadelphia, Strasburg, Sugarcreek, or Tuscarawas) to complete and turn in a registration form," said Public Relations Coordinator Megan Kovalaske. "They can also access the form on our website at and mail it into the library."

According to Kovalaske, early registration is underway for this 80s themed race until March 18 with fees of $25 for adults and $15 for kids (Grades K- Age 17). Race day registration fees are $30 for adults and $20 for kids (Grades K-Age 17).

"With over nine months of planning we are eager to see our race come to fruition," said Kovalaske. "We are looking forward to seeing runners dressed in their 80s attire. We want to see their leg warmers, Flashdance style sweatshirts, rock-and-roll t-shirts, big hair, and mullets."

The library's 5K is being planned by a committee made up of library staff: Debra Cahill, Melissa Dean, Jessica Gard, Megan Kovalaske, Lindsay Long and Michelle McMorrow Ramsell, as well as community members: Brittany Cochenour of Union Hospital, Jennifer Horner of the New Philadelphia Police Department, and Terri Schrock of Bair, Goodie and Associates.

"Proceeds from the Bookin' It 5K will benefit the library's bookmobile fund," said Director Michelle McMorrow Ramsell. "The bookmobile benefits students in elementary schools throughout the county; the bookmobile fund will help with expenses related to the vehicle."

Goodie bags will be given to runners the day of the race, and those who register before March 18 will also receive a T-shirt. Medals, designed by Warther's Woodcarving will be awarded to the top male and female in the following categories: Grades K-2, 3-5, Ages: 12-17, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+. Costume awards will also be given.

Kovalaske said that some space still remains for T-shirt sponsors.
