DOVER -- Union Hospital has been designated as a "Breast Imaging Center of Excellence" by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation recognizes that the breast imaging program at Union Hospital meets the highest standards in the Radiology profession. ACR evaluators have determined that Union Hospital's Radiology Department has achieved high practice standards in image quality, staff qualifications, technology, and quality control and assurance program.

This designation came after a rigorous evaluation and review process by ACR physicians and medical physicists.

"The designation is important and well-deserved because it recognizes that with the technology that is available here, Union Hospital can offer patients a quick response from standard mammograms to any required diagnostic imaging and biopsies," said Dr. Michael W. Soehnlen, medical director of the Radiology Department at Union Hospital. "We're the only area hospital that can offer 3D Mammography for a screening mammogram."

This designation recognizes the hospital's Radiology Department's commitment to adopting the ACR's highest standards of excellence for breast imaging. These standards include the areas of mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, ultrasound breast imaging and ultrasound breast biopsy.

An important component of Union Hospital's breast imaging programs is the recent addition of a 3D Digital Breast Mammography screening unit to its Radiology Department. The 3D Digital Mammography unit is the standard technology for all patients who receive an annual screening mammogram at the hospital's Imaging Center located just across from the Main Entrance to the hospital and near the Boulevard.

In recent studies, the 3D Digital Mammography exams not only were able to find cancers that remained undetected by traditional mammograms, but also were able to significantly reduce the number of callbacks for additional imaging.

The image produced from 3D Digital Mammography provides a radiologist with greater visibility of breast tissue than ever before, allowing for a more confident assessment of the results. Instead of viewing all of the complexities of breast tissue in a flat image as with traditional mammography, fine details are more visible in the 3D Digital Mammography and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below.

To schedule a screening mammogram, call the hospital's Central Scheduling Department at 330-364-0888. A physician's order is required.
