DOVER -- On Saturday, July 18, the Tuscarawas County Challenger League had its annual Grand Finale. All of the league's amazing players, buddies, and coaches will be recognized as well as some of the season's sponsors.
Big Time Sports, fueled by the voice and presence of Charlie Jones, will be on the scene to broadcast the game, and Robert Glasgow, former coach of the TC Rockets basketball team and avid supporter of area athletics, will be announcing.
The Tuscarawas County Challenger League was founded in 2010 through Bolivar Baseball/Softball Association.
It began as a dream of one dad, Dan McCauley, wanting his son to have the same opportunity to participate in America's favorite past-time as others. The Tuscarawas County Challenger League worked together with Canton Challenger league and Bonnie McClellan when it was first started.
This year marks the six year anniversary for the Tuscarawas County Challenger League! Each year, the league has grown and has participated in fundraisers such as Dine to Donate at local restaurants (Bob Evans, Applebees, Texas Roadhouse, and Buffalo Wild Wings), a car wash, a quarter auction, and bake sales. The funds raised are used to help make attending the State Tournaments (this year in Toledo/Maumee) more affordable for the families.
Challenger is a division of Little League baseball that is available to players (ages 6 through 21+) with physical and/or cognitive challenges or who may have an IEP (Individual Education Plan) or 504-Plan through their schools. When needed, players are paired with a buddy to assist with batting and/or fielding.
Family members, friends, and other members of the community are encouraged to participate in a variety of capacities as well.
The Tuscarawas County Challenger League is open to any player living in the Tuscarawas County and surrounding areas.
The league, which only had nine players when it first began, currently has teams in Newcomerstown (TC Braves), New Philadelphia (TC DiamondBacks), Dover (TC Reds), and Bolivar (TC Indians).
