DOVER -- Firefighters from the cities of Dover and New Philadelphia recently toured the construction site for the new Union Hospital Lauren Emergency Center.

"Our medics spend a great deal of time at the Emergency Center at the hospital and we have been very interested in the project," said New Philadelphia Fire Chief Jim Parrish. "All of us are impressed with the facility that is being constructed and we believe the community will receive great benefits for many years to come from this modern and well-equipped Emergency Center."

The 38,000-square-foot, $17.7-million UH Lauren Emergency Center currently is under construction next to the entrance of the hospital's current Emergency Department. The new Emergency Center is expected to open next spring and be fully operational next summer.

The new Emergency Center will include an expanded floor plan, more than doubling the size of the current 15,000-square-foot facility. It will house 38 patient treatment rooms and is designed for improved operating efficiency and a better patient experience. It also will feature major treatment and trauma rooms, isolation rooms, a bariatric room and the OB/GYN rooms.

"We had some casual conversations with the firefighters and they had a genuine interest in seeing the progress of construction and discussing how they will use the new Emergency Center and interact with the staff when it opens," said Carey Gardner, director of community relations for Union Hospital. "Many of the features of the expanded Emergency Center will provide our patients with an enhanced experience."

Union Hospital has launched a public capital fund-raising campaign to help with the cost of building the new Emergency Center. Monte Ball, the hospital's director of fund development, said the hospital has established a fund-raising goal of $5 million and is more than halfway to that goal.

Ball said those interested in making a gift or multi-year pledge to the hospital's Emergency Center Capital Campaign, or who would like more information, should call him at 330-602-0789 or via e-mail at Ball also is available to make presentations about the project to area businesses, clubs and organizations.
