'The Putz' to be performed at local church

NEW PHILADELPHIA -- Sharon Moravian Church has been celebrating its 200th anniversary throughout 2015. A final project that they are very proud of is "The Putz." The first year for this was 1996, and they have presented this every year since with the exception of two years. Nativity scenes with Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus are a Christmas season tradition in many churches and homes. There are a variety of names given to the depiction of the manger scene, the German use the word "Putz." It developed from the German word "putzen," meaning to shine or decorate.

This year, people may visit "The Putz" at Sharon Moravian Church weekends, beginning Dec. 4. The free presentation lasts approximately 20 minutes. A stage at the church holds a miniature Holy Land measuring 112 square feet of live moss and a canopy above contains stars usual to the northern December sky. There are 14 portions or scenes spotlighted with electric lights during a tape recorded narration of the nativity. The constellations are constructed as they laid in the sky during the last two weeks of December in Bethlehem at the time of Jesus's birth. Music is taped from the choir with narration as well from a former pastor. Nativity figures are woodcarvings from Germany and olive woodcarvings from the Holy Land.

Following the presentation, attendees are invited to join them for Moravian sugar cake and coffee.

Available for sale will be two sizes of Moravian Stars and special edition cookbooks.

The Putz will be open Fridays and Saturdays, beginning Dec. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Special showings are available by appointment, calling the church office at 740-922-5507. Groups are always welcome. Sharon Moravian Church is well-known for its Christmas Eve candlelight vigils, 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., as well as Easter dawn services.
