Adam Helbling was a guest speaker at the Newcomerstown Middle School on Monday, Nov. 23.

He brought with him a powerful message for our students and staff.

As a college student with bipolar disorder who was battling drug abuse, Helbling was going down the wrong path in life.

He would eventually enter a full state of psychosis and develop grandiose delusions.

This led him to believe that he was the second coming of Jesus Christ. On Jan. 22, 2011, while in this psychotic state, he flipped his vehicle five times front over front. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Helbling was miraculously brought back to life by the EMS workers, and that fateful day would become the very first of the rest of his life.

The accident left him paralyzed from the chest down, but with one arm still functional.

As Adam learned that he had paid the ultimate price for his mistakes, he chose not to wallow away in self-pity.

He has decided to fail forward and make something of his life.

He now enjoys his time writing on his blog at He also enjoys motivational speaking and finds it to be a greater thrill than waterskiing ever was.

He believes that everything happens for a reason and is happier now than ever before.
