CAMBRIDGE -- Southeastern Med, Southeastern Ohio Physicians, Inc. (Drs. Sarap, Leslie, Paulick and O'Hanlon), and the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery (AOBS) are announcing that Dr. Joseph O'Hanlon has obtained certification from the AOBS in the area of General Surgery.
Board certification indicates that Dr O'Hanlon has completed a surgical residency training program approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and passed rigorous examinations that are designed, constructed and conducted to evaluate a physician's understanding of the basic sciences, surgical principles and osteopathic philosophy of surgery. Dr. O'Hanlon has demonstrated excellence in the osteopathic philosophy of surgery as it applies to the diagnosis and management of surgical diseases, familiarity with current advances in surgical philosophy and techniques, possession of valid surgical judgment and a high degree of skill in diagnostic, operative and therapeutic procedures.
The AOBS, with national offices in Chicago, is one of 18 certifying boards of the AOA. The AOBS was established to define the qualifications required for osteopathic physicians for certification in General Surgery and the surgical subspecialties, including vascular, neurological, plastic and reconstructive, cardiothoracic, urological and critical care surgery. The AOBS has the responsibility to determine by examination and other criteria, the fitness and competence of the osteopathic physician for certification. By these actions, the AOBS maintains and promotes moral and ethical standards in the practice of surgery within the osteopathic profession.
Dr. O'Hanlon is a native of Dodge City, Kansas, and completed his General Surgery training at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He is a graduate of the University of South Florida and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr O'Hanlon is trained in all aspects of general surgery including gastrointestinal surgery, cancer surgery, breast care, gallbladder and acid reflux disease, trauma, vascular, endocrine, hernia repair, surgical critical care and endoscopy. He has surgical privileges at Southeastern Med in Cambridge and Coshocton Memorial Hospital in Coshocton, Ohio. He is a member of the Southeastern Med Cancer Committee and currently serves as community outreach coordinator for the Southeastern Med Cancer Program. Dr. O'Hanlon has been involved in breast, skin and colon cancer screening programs in Cambridge and Coshocton.
Dr. O'Hanlon is married to Andrea (Sarap) O'Hanlon, a graduate of Cambridge High School and Kenyon College. Andrea is a physician's assistant, having earned her Masters Degree through Marietta College's Physician Assistant Program. She is currently employed as a physician's assistant at the Muskingum Valley Health Clinic in Cambridge. Dr. and Mrs. O'Hanlon reside in Cambridge with their son, Brendan.
