DOVER -- On Wednesday, April 27, students from area schools participated in the 22nd annual Teen Driving Roadeo at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds to win cash and fame for themselves and their schools.

Sponsored by Safe Kids Tuscarawas (Tuscarawas County Health Department), OSU Extension, Tuscarawas County Chief's Association and Ohio State Patrol this annual event is geared to help young drivers learn better maneuverability skills, rules of the road, and to make them think about their actions when driving. According to Ohio State Patrol statistics, the number of young people being injured and killed on Tuscarawas County roads continually decreases. They like to think that our Teen Driving Roadeo has been one of the reasons. The Teen Driving Roadeo has been a model for other counties and has been implemented in several counties throughout Ohio including Carroll County.

The Teen Roadeo began as collaboration between Sopher Insurance Agency, The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Safe Kids Tuscarawas/ Tuscarawas County Health Department and OSU Extension office. Gradually over the years new partners such as Parkway Auto Group (donated the use of cars for the driving events and sends a mechanic to teach students car maintenance), Ohio Department of Transportation (driving simulator), and the Tuscarawas County Coroner's office, contributed educational programs. Law enforcement officers from Dover Police Department, Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Department, Newcomerstown Police Department, as well as the Ohio State Highway Patrol judged the driving scenarios, and Safe Kids Tuscarawas County donated the overall school winner trophy. The program receives support from a grant by the Tuscarawas County Foundation Safety Grant AAA Tuscarawas County Advised Charity Fund.
