The annual Rachel B. Stoffer Spelling Bee was held Friday, Jan. 13 in the Middle School auditorium and three students emerged as champions; Jocelyn Cunningham, 1st Runner-up; Seth Gamble, Champion; and Steven Rader, 2nd Runner-up.

The annual junior high spelling bee was renamed "The Rachel B. Stoffer Spelling Bee" in January 1986.

Rachel B. Stoffer was a dedicated educator in the Newcomerstown School District for over 36 years. She held an English degree from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and she was awarded the title of "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" in Newcomerstown. Her career in the Newcomerstown school system began in the East Elementary School, yet she primarily spent her teaching career with students in grades 6-8 at the Newcomerstown Middle School.

Mrs. Stoffer was born in 1905, lived to be 80 years old and leaves a legacy to the school system and its students.
