The Newcomerstown West Elementary was honored recently by the Ohio State Board of Education, receiving a "Momentum Award" for achievement during the 2016-2017 school year.

In a letter to West Elementary Principal Erin Peoples, Tess Elshoff, president of the State Board of Education, wrote: "I’m very pleased to notify you that Ohio’s State Board of Education has granted West Elementary School a 2016-2017 Momentum Award. Now in its third year, the Momentum Award program is the State Board’s way of recognizing schools that have received A’s on each Value- Added measure included on Ohio’s school and district report cards. Congratulations to you and your school for keeping the learning momentum high!

"Your school report card for the 2016-2017 school year shows your pupils enjoyed greater than expected growth in reading and mathematics. Your accomplishment makes you part of an elite group of schools that are ensuring the academic growth of students from every background and ability level.

"Members of the State Board of Education congratulate you on your vision and on equipping your staff with the tools they need to ensure academic growth for every child. Please convey our thanks to your teachers, support staff and parents for believing that every child can achieve. Your school is a wonderful example for all Ohio schools.

Principal Peoples said she was excited by news, noting that the Newcomerstown West Elementary School was the only elementary school in Tuscarawas County to receive the award.

"Our school earned A's in each value added measure on our state report card," Principal Peoples said. "Value Added measures the amount of growth students make within a school year. To earn an A students must make greater than expected growth in reading and math. We are super proud of this!"
